The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
