The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
