Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
