European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
