Balloons Employed to Illegally Transport Tobacco Products Shut Down Lithuanian Airport
Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
